Hearing the unheard, seeing the unnoticed: BukSU Sociology students celebrate Earth Day through a photo exhibit

Before conducting the photo exhibit celebrated in line with Earth day, Sociology students of the Bukidnon State University (BukSU) had workshops pertaining to the theme, Voices of the Unheard: Seeing things as we are. The first workshop was held in Kilala Hall, BukSU on the 31st day of March where students had lectures on photography. Ms. Nova Thirdy Agravante, a BS Development Communication faculty delivered her lecture about the basic principles of photography, the different angles to the different shots, and a whole lot more. The workshop was able to impart on students lessons on how to take photos and how to get a good shot. The second workshop was the Creative Dramatics mentored by Ms. Jorrie Mae Hernandez who taught students on how to express their emotions and how to convey a message through actions. The students then had a production number that focuses on portraying different social problems. The two workshops were intended for the photo exhibit.

        

On April 25 to 27 of 2017, the 3rd year Sociology students then had their photo exhibit entitled, Verstehen (German term for Understanding) with a theme ‘Voices of the Unheard: Seeing things as we are’ held at CAS Building Lobby. This activity is in celebration of the Earth Month.

Mr. Jade Harley Bretaña, instructor of the 3rd year Sociology students, headed the program of the exhibit. The exhibit is a composition of various photos that represent different voices and messages of which are portrayals of the different threats caused by and that of which can and may endanger human beings.

         

The theme is an advocacy for sustainable development especially in the urban areas. It speaks up on a reality where the little things that compromise a society are given less importance and value. The students in the photos represent themselves as objects and animals. The photos exhibited convey a message about putting oneself in the shoes of those unheard in order to understand better. Further, the activity empowers everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental, ecological and societal protections.
