Dr. Manuel Victor J. Sapitula, Treasurer of the Philippine Sociological Society and Assistant Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of the Philippines Diliman, was nominated valedictorian for his graduate cohort at the National University of Singapore.
Dr. Sapitula obtained his PhD in Sociology in 2013 after successfully defending his dissertation on Marian piety and popular religion in the Philippines. He addressed the graduate class of Sociology and Communications and New Media during the Commencement ceremony held on 8 July 2014 at the University Cultural Center.
In his speech, Dr. Sapitula emphasized the role of the University in the formation of students imbued with strong character and sound values. He encouraged the graduates to utilize the knowledge and skills they learned in University education to foster social transformation and benefit the common good.
