Call for Papers: 2016 Founding National Conference of the Philippine International Studies Organization

By: Cleve V. Arguelles

The fields of sociology and international relations have long followed separate paths of disciplinal development. The changing character of international politics, however, signals the need for more engagements between the two. In the recent years, many of sociology’s enduring concerns–from identities, power, and social organizations–have been used to offer novel understanding of problems in international relations (IR) theory and practice. On the other hand, we have seen a growing number of sociologists exploring issues such as state-formation and conflict issues that are of fundamental concerns to the discipline of IR.

In this conference, we invite our colleagues in sociology to share the responsibilities of interrogating the changing relationship of the Philippines to its neighbor and the world. We hope that this conference will serve as an avenue for fruitful exchanges between the two disciplines with significant benefits not only for our disciplines but also to our continuing quest as human beings to understand the world that we live in.
