2025 PSS International Conference: Call For Abstracts

The world today is experiencing an unprecedented layering of crises. Emerging from the pandemic, old predicaments take on a new magnitude of urgency as worsening economic inequalities, accelerating environmental degradation, growing political polarization, and escalating gender and ethnic tensions compound, exacerbate, and reinforce each other. Former certainties give way to novel contingencies as institutions may be unwilling or unable to tackle the already present crises.

And yet, we are also seeing the emergence—if not the resurgence—of solidarities and care. Labor groups, environmentalists, feminist and queer movements, religious organizations, and indigenous communities have come out offering refuge, navigating uncertainties, resisting oppression, and developing alternatives to existing systems. Their ideas and actions invite us to imagine plural futures in the face of the unrelenting now.

How is care experienced, made sense of, and responded to in and out of times of crises? What might be the possibilities, boundaries, and implications of care in a complex and conflicted society? What might a caring society look like amid compounding and co-constitutive crises?

The Philippine Sociological Society invites sociologists, social scientists, practitioners, scholars, and representatives of diverse communities, circles, and groups to probe deeper into the intersectionalities between crises and care at the 2025 Philippine Sociological Society Conference. This year’s conference will be hybrid with onsite sessions held at Ateneo de Davao University in Davao City on October 1 – 3, 2025.

We welcome paper submissions and panel proposals that are theoretical, conceptual, and empirical in nature. Submissions and proposals which draw insights from applied work or practice in the industry, as well as those which offer non-hegemonic ways of disseminating knowledge (e.g., creative works, performances, etc.) are welcome as well. In line with the conference theme, paper submissions and panel proposals are encouraged to address any of the following sub-themes or related topics:

  • Educational crises and pedagogies of care.
  • Environmental degradation and ecologies of care
