What forces prompt Filipinos to participate as citizens of the republic – to sign a petition, for instance, join rallies and demonstrations, donate money to causes, or express views on the internet?

Data from a 2014 national survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations as part of the International Social Survey Programme enable a test of two models: a cognitive engagement model that sees participation to result from individual dispositions (among them personal efficacy, personal interest or media consumption of politics) and a social capital model that views participation to result from social interaction (among them organizational participation, peer interaction on politics, and levels of trust).  Which of these models work best for the Philippines?  This lecture presents selected results of this work-in-progress, invites discussion of the preliminary findings, and draws implications on how Filipinos can construct lives of active citizenship.

Ricardo Abad is Professor Emeritus and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology as well as Founding Director and faculty member of Department of Fine Arts (formerly the Fine Arts Program), Ateneo de Manila University. He obtained his doctorate in Sociology from Fordham University, and soon after returning to the Philippines, launched a second career in the theater becoming, in 1984, Artistic Director of Tanghalang Ateneo, a post he held until 2014. He was also President of the Philippine Sociological Society, Editor of the Philippine Sociological Review, Director of the Institute of Philippine Culture, and Chair of the School Forum, a Senior Fellow and former Board Member of the Social Weather Stations, and currently Vice-President of the Asia-Pacific Bureau of Theater Schools and Treasurer of the Asian Shakespeare Association. 

His work has earned him several awards, among them: the Metrobank Outstanding Teacher Award, the Most Outstanding Scholarly Work in the Social Sciences as well as the Most Outstanding Contribution to the Humanities, the last two from the Ateneo, and three ALIW Awards for Best Direction.  He obained a fellowship from the Asian Public Intellectuals Program in 2014, and the year after was appointed International Guest Director at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. In 2005, he co-founded RolePlayers, a training company that uses theater principles to enrich job performance, and this work, along with the Dynamic Classrooms workshops he began at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology has engaged him as a trainer in many parts of the country.  He is a recipient of the Rev. Frank X. Lynch, S.J. Memorial Chair in Sociology and Anthropology since 2001.

His present lecture extends his work on social inequality and social capital published in Philippine Studies (1997). Loyola Schools Review (2002), Philippine Sociological Review (2005) as well as his explorations of cultural capital via a study on Shakespeare in the Philippines (Shakespeare’s Asian Journeys, Routledge, 2017) and Malaysian activist theater, forthcoming in Kritika Kultura (2017).  In June 2017, Dr. Abad will assume another life, this time as Artistic Director of the Areté.
