A Professorial Lecture by Dr. Ricardo G. Abad!
The Office of the Associate Dean for Research and Creative Work and the University Research Council invite you to “Citizenship Participation in the Philippines ” Selected Results From a 2014 National Survey | A Professorial Lecture by Dr. Ricardo G. Abad on 30 March 2017, 4:30PM – 6:00PM | Faber Hall, Ground Floor, of the Ateneo de Manila University.
What forces prompt Filipinos to participate as citizens of the republic – to sign a petition, for instance, join rallies and demonstrations, donate money to causes, or express views on the internet?
Data from a 2014 national survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations as part of the International Social Survey Programme enable a test of two models: a cognitive engagement model that sees participation to result from individual dispositions (among them personal efficacy, personal interest or media consumption of politics) and a social capital model that views participation to result from social interaction (among them organizational participation, peer interaction on politics, and levels of trust). Which of these models work best for the Philippines? This lecture presents selected results of this work-in-progress, invites discussion of the preliminary findings, and draws implications on how Filipinos can construct lives of active citizenship.
