PAALAM Dr. Gelia Tagumpay-Castillo, National Scientist (Rural Sociology)
Few hours ago, the family, friends, and colleagues of our dear Dr. Gelia Tagumpay-Castillo gathered to pay last respects at the Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory, Araneta Avenue, Quezon City. The ritual was simple and heart-warming. While there was an air of sadness, a deep sense of completeness was felt – for a life meaningfully-woven by motherly and scholarly works of “Gelia” – our national scientist in the rare but salient field of rural sociology.
Filipino sociologists across generations attended funeral mass and spent time recalling fascinating moments with Gelia. It was like a reunion of Philippine Sociological Society’s (PSS) board from its early years to the present. Present were Dr. Mercedes B. Concepcion, national scientist, Dr. Sylvia H. Guerrero, Dr. Clarence M. Batan, Dr. Clemen C. Aquino, Prof. Stella P. Go, Dr. Maruja M.B. Asis, Dr. Mary Racelis, and Prof. Nina Castillo-Carandang, daughter of Dr. Castillo (left to right).
To celebrate the life and works of Dr. Gelia T. Castillo, a plenary session in her honor will be convened during the Philippine Sociological Society 2017 National Conference at UP-Cebu on October 5-7, 2017.

Dr. Castillo’s ashes will be brought to the Diocesan Shrine of St. Therese of the Child Jesus (inside University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) campus) for a wake in the afternoon.
