Where do sociologists go?

Last 30 April 2015, UP Diliman’s Sociology Core Group, also known as Sociosphere, held a career talk entitled “SOCIOFORECAST: Where Do Sociologists Go?” The event was co-hosted with The Philippine League of Sociology Students-UPD, UP Kalipunan ng mga Mag-aaral ng Sosyolohiya (UP KMS), UP Praxis and the Department of Sociology.
Ms. Sheena Sabio, survey specialist in Social Weather Stations, Atty. Abdel Jamal Disangcopan, former partner coordination and information management officer at WHO Philippines, Mr. Jeff Crisostomo, legislative and media officer in the House of Representatives of the Philippines, Atty. Hope Patagan, associate in Fortun, Narvasa & Salazar and Ms. Erika Mayoni, project manager in the Department of Budget and Management were the guest speakers. They actively engaged the audience with their fierce, endearing and, at times, overwhelming narratives.
L-R: Fritzie Mamawag (Outgoing Sociology Department Representative), Sheena Sabio (SWS), Abdel Jamal Disangcopan (WHO-Philippines), Jeff Crisostomo (House of Representatives), Hope Patagan, (Fortun Narvasa & Salazar) and Erika Mayoni (Department of Budget and Management)
All speakers graduated with a BA Sociology degree but are currently pursuing various fields of expertise. The speakers serve as excellent examples of how a BA Sociology degree offers many professional opportunities that can enhance and develop both the self and the nation. As Hope Patagan said, “Make sure it is really what you want because it is about commitment.”Aside from sharing their educational and work experiences, they also shared tips and encouraging words to the audience. As Jeff Crisostomo puts it, “Ang binibigay ng Sociology ay puso para baguhin ang ating lipunan.” Erika Mayoni affirms Crisostomo’s comments, “Some people argue na ang ‘para sa pamilya’ at ‘para sa bayan’ are mutually exclusive. The truth is, it is not. If it [work] doesn’t feel right, it’s probably not right.”
