Gerald M. Nicolas, an MA Sociology student (UP Diliman) and project officer at the John J. Carroll Institute on Church and Social Issues published an op-ed piece at the Philippine Daily Inquirer last Sunday.

Entitled, The Mothers of Navotas,  the piece narrates the ways in which mothers in urban poor communities have actively negotiated the terms of their eviction. From attending DPWH consultation forums to organising to fight for their right to the city, Nicolas demonstrates that indeed, mothers know best.

As a sociologist, Gerald Nicolas’s work has focused on the political activity of urban poor movements. His work has been published at the Philippine Sociological Review’s Special Issue on Classical Sociological Theory.
